PRESTWICH
Prestwich, a parish in conjunction with Oldham, and a township in the hundred of Salford, 4 miles N.N.W. from Manchester. Inhabitants 2724. A rectory in the deanery of Manchester, value £46 4s. 9d. Patron the earl of Wilton. Prestwich with Oldham constitutes but one rectory, but each place has its own churchwardens. The church is an ancient Gothic structure, with a tower and six bells, the church yard commands a romantic and beautiful prospect. The soil in this parish is very indifferent, except where the land has been much improved by manuring and draining; it is chiefly in pasture for the supply of milk and butter for the Manchester market; the air is remarkable for its salubrity. Irwell House, near Prestwich, is the seat of Thomas Drinkwater, esq.; Prestwich Park is the seat of Thomas Marriot, esq.; and Sedgley is the seat of George Philips, esq. Prestwich has six townships :-
